目はからだのあかりである。だから、あなたの目が澄んでおれば、全身も明るいだろう。しかし、あなたの目が悪ければ、全身も暗いだろう。だから、もしあなたの内なる光が暗ければ、その暗さは、どんなであろう。だれも、ふたりの主人に兼ね仕えることはできない。一方を憎んで他方を愛し、あるいは、一方に親しんで他方をうとんじるからである。あなたがたは、神と富とに兼ね仕えることはできない。(マタイ6：22)
「目が澄んでいる」とは、英語ではsingle eye、すなわちどのような時にもただ神のみに信頼する姿勢を言います。全知全能の神だけに信頼することこそ最も安全な道、人生の最高の保険です。イエス様が荒れ野で最初に遭われた試練は、石をパンに変えるという誘惑でした。目に見えない神様だけに信頼しているか、それとも目に見えるお金を神としているか。結局、そこが問われるのです。

“The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great is that darkness!
